What we did

Helped Justin Morgan, head coach and manager of Super League side, Hull Kingston Rovers, set personal goals and develop a coaching culture at his club.

The Scenario

At just 34 years old, Australian Justin Morgan is the youngest coach/manager in Rugby League.

Three years into his role, he had been successful in taking Hull Kingston Rovers from also-rans to Super League contenders.

Talented and utterly passionate about his side, Justin was, however, aware that his hot-headedness was standing in the way of greater glory.

Enter Wescott Williams.

The Approach

Initially, Wescott Williams has focussed on helping Justin voice his goal to be "The Best Rugby League Coach in the World", examining exactly what that person looks, sounds, thinks and acts like.

To control his tendency towards heated outbursts, Justin has been coached in how to apply the GROW model of thinking to govern his own behaviours. Before responding to a situation, he now goes through a mental checklist to assess Goals, Reality, Options and What Next. Looking back at the profile he created of "The Best", he is then able to assess the most appropriate response.

This approach was utilised to ensure Justin is able to own, understand and internalise what he needs to focus on doing differently - vital skills at any time, but particularly relevant during the heat of play.

Simple, yet effective, Justin is now being coached in how to pass this expertise on to his team of coaches and, in turn, the players.

The Results

Hull Kingston Rovers made the 2009 Super League playoffs, finishing the season in fourthplace, the highest position they have ever achieved. Justin Morgan has stated this is in no small part due to the coaching he has received from Wescott Williams.

Having experienced, both personally and professionally, the incredible positive results of receiving structured business coaching, Justin Morgan has now commissioned Wescott Williams to help establish a coaching culture throughout the Hull Kingston Rovers club, encompassing everyone from coaches and players to office and match day staff.
