Performance Management: Sport v Business
Rugby League giant tackles performance management
Justin Morgan, Head Coach of Rugby Super League team Hull Kingston Rovers and BBC pundit, played a blinder at the latest Wescott Williams client forum when he shared his experiences and views on the subject of what businesses can learn from sport when it comes to performance management.
A Wescott Williams client and a brilliant motivational speaker, Justin answered questions from the 14 delegates who attended the event, held at the British Library, London on 6 July 2011.
He talked at length about the importance in the sporting world of detailed reflection on each performance and explored how businesses could more effectively manage the overall performance and that of individual employees by spending more time reviewing and analysing outputs against inputs.
He said: "I think that in the world of business, companies can be in too much of a rush to move on to the next big thing. Spending more time reviewing what's gone before could help organisations more clearly recognise the patterns of activity that create positive outcomes so they can replicate those patterns going forward.
"That's not to say it was all one sided. I've ended up taking away some great ideas that I'll be trying out when I get back to the ground. Specifically, I'll be trying to put a little more structure around how we review performance, because I think we could benefit from a more business like approach sometimes."
Colin Williams, Managing Director, Wescott Williams said: "This session was one of the best to date. We had some rave reviews from delegates both on the day and afterwards and we are enormously grateful to Justin for his first class performance. "
This latest event formed part of a regular series of client forums hosted by Wescott Williams. Further details of the next event will be available soon.
